Made some salmon with steamed broccoli and tomatoes last night and opened a 2005 Stadt Krems - Gruner Veltliner Wachtberg to go with it. I didn’t think it would turn out to be a spectacular paring (it wasn’t) but I’d had the Gruner for a while and wanted to try it.
The bit about German and Austrian wines is that they are downright painful to pronounce with their marathon names. Even the regions are tough. Here’s where the Gruner was from:
Austria - Niederosterreich - Kremstal
Sweet lord, try dropping that one in your conversation at your next dinner.
Anyway, the enclosure was a capsule with a zip-tie like removal strip. Underneath that was a screwcap-ish thing that took forever to get off (I nearly had to cut it off). Under that was a glass stopper with rubber seal that I had never seen before. It was as if I was going to find a Belgian ale underneath all that sealing.
I’d put up a pic but I’m too lazy (note to self: join 2005 and get camera phone).
Finally, the wine itself was a citrus blast, with lemon and sour apple aromas. It tasted spritzy, not much fruit to taste. Didn’t settle down much either, tasted the same at the end of the night as it did at the beginning.
