Ye Olde Baltimore Sun is reporting that Gov O’Malley got cold feet just before signing the bill that would allow fruity zingy drinks like Smirnoff Ice (nicknamed “alcopops”) to be classified as beers instead of spirits. Why would anyone care what the State classifies as beer? Well, as with everything the answer is money. Food and Wine Blog covered this pretty well last month, so no need to rehash the details here. In short, lots of money at stake for our friendly neighborhood liquor distributors and, by extension, Joe Taxpayer.
O’Malley said he “want[ed] a little more time to think about [signing the bill]” after meeting with the national leader of MADD and several other activists.
