Boordy and Basignani and Rambling

Boordy’s winery is every bit as polished as you would expect from a tasting room in Napa. There are huge fields for holding outdoor events, a patio, two rooms with seating inside, a big tasting bar, and wine available by the glass or by the bottle.

Our pourer happened to run Boordy’s shipping program. She said that there are only four states that Boordy can ship to and that Maryland is not one of them. Alaska is on the list though. Who in Alaska is in Boordy’s wine club?

All of Boordy’s wines are bottled for immediate consumption except for their Merlot, which is the only wine which they do not blast with Argon before corking. Our pourer said that they felt the Merlot was wound up tight and could stand for 6-12 months of laying around in the bottle relaxing. From the tasting, I thought the Merlot went down just fine, but the winemaker knows best.

Across Monkton, Basignani’s winery is rustic and raw. The vineyard runs up flush with the parking lot, as if every inch of space is valuable. When we entered the tasting room it was dark and empty. I don’t mean that there were no visitors, I mean that there was nobody at all. No visitors, no employees, no lights. After a moment a friendly bearded man came in from outside and poured a long flight of wine for us.

If you’re looking for a trip through wine history, Basignani’s tasting room is a good start. Lining every shelf on every wall are rows and rows of ancient wine bottles. There are bottles of Bordeaux, Brunello, Burgundy, Champagne, and even some large formats like a 9 liter of Pegau Cuvee Reservee.

Across both wineries, the wines weren’t bad. Any displeasure in wine quality was offset with pricing that could only be considered reasonable. Most bottles were under $15 and the majority are in the $12-$13 range. Now, everyone please slowly turn your heads down I-95 and proceed to wag your index finger at Virginia.
