Blush In The Woods

Went to Wine in the Woods this weekend. While Big Brown was running circles around other horses at Pimlico, I was sitting in Symphony Woods with 50,000 other wine lovers listening to Jazz and drinking down Maryland Wine like water.
The Wife are lucky enough to have friends who are seasoned tailgaters, so we were prepared for an event like this. We had chairs, tarp for the mud, blankets, and a rollup table for the center of the group to hold up all the bottles and keep them within arms reach. If you get there early you can stake out a good spot in the area facing the music. Latecomers may be stuck with fragments of grass here and there. Regardless of where you were, the music was nice and mellow. Bring some chairs, sit back and enjoy.
Nineteen wineries were in attendance and it was less of a tasting event and more of a bottle selling event. Lots of bottles were taken back to the seats. Maryland wine drinkers sure love their sweet wines and blush wines, by far the leaders in sales. The sweets aren’t my bag but I got into the Cygnus Maryland Blush a little bit. Pretty much anything works when you’re out in the sun.
Speaking of the wine
Oh right, the wine. Elk Run had a nice Malbec. I had a bottle of their Cabernet Sauvignon a month ago and it was so bad I didn’t even mention it on this blog. Tasting it at their table led me to believe that my bottle was off… but not by all that much.
I was happy to see Terrapin Station showed up considering that their tasting room isn’t yet finished. Terrapin Station is going eco-friendly on everyone and selling their wine in boxes instead of bottles. The wines weren’t bad, their dry reds have a little way to go yet.
The Montepulciano from Penn Oaks was good too, and Penn Oaks was the consensus favorite among the dry wines in our group. Linganore’s May Wine ruled the sweets at our table.
Overall the event was well run, so hats off to The Howard Country Department of Rec & Parks for a great afternoon.
