My brain couldn’t keep up with the simple five option tasting menu at St. Michael’s Winery. They were doing a brisk business: every seat in the tasting room was taken, every seat on the deck was taken, and every neuron in my brain was taken trying to decide which flight I was going with.

Shall I pick the dry whites for $6, the dry reds for $6, The mixed for $7, the sweets for $7 (easy scratch) or the whole enchelada, a taste of all 498 wines that were made at St. Michael’s winery for $12. At least, it felt like 498. It may have been 499.

St. Michael’s Winery is famous for their Gollywobbler red and white, sweet wines that the back of the label implores you to try over ice like a cocktail or mixed into Sangria.  Their “Get Wobbly” shirts, a nice marketing slogan, are available in the entire visible spectrum of colors.  Marketing savvy aside, sweet wines are not my thing.  I went with the dry red flight and tasted the Syrah, Merlot, California Cab, Maryland Cab, Chambourcin, and something else that I can’t remember.  The only thing noteworthy is that the Chambourcin was $34.50.  I considered picking up a case when I realized that price was PER BOTTLE.  Finger wags all around.

The Wife had more success with the dry white flight where the leadoff hitter Long Splice White turned out to be the winner of the day.  Coming in under $15 a bottle, it makes a nice value too.

Sitting at the Eastern edge of the main drag of St. Michael’s, St. Michael’s Winery is an easy stop if you’re tooling around for the day.  The staff is top notch and the summer heat is a perfect pairing for a tall glass of chilled Long Splice White.
