If you can brave the climb up the long and winding gravel road, Bluemont Vineyard offers one of the nicest views from any winery in the area. But I do mean climb - at times the little hatchback complained mightily at the incline.
You’ll be rewarded at the top with a view of Tysons Corner, thirty or forty miles off in the distance. The winery is two floors, both with porches facing out down the hill. When we were there, a live band was playing on the first floor while they were busy with tastings and picnics on the second. There were children and dogs running around all over the place. If that’s not your thing, you may want to seek out a more secluded vineyard.
The wine was a little disappointing. They haven’t been around long enough to be able to use their own grapes, so maybe that will change. The 2007 Viognier “The Goat” was nice. It was a warm day, so the chilled wines were popular. Some of their fruit wines are so popular that they’ve all but sold out and aren’t offered for tasting.
They waive the $5 tasting fee if you buy a bottle, the bottles aren’t expensive, and the view is pretty fantastic. It’s worth a visit if you’re in the area, but don’t expect fireworks from the wine.
