History of Château Lynch-Bages

Located in the Médoc, on the outskirts of Pauillac, Château Lynch-Bages has a name that tells much of its story. “Bages” refers to the hamlet where generations of winegrowers have lived since the 16th century, while “Lynch” comes from the family who owned the estate from 1749 onwards.

In 1824, the estate was sold to Sébastien Jurine, a wine merchant from Geneva, and was later managed by his son André-Louis. Under his stewardship, Château Lynch-Bages went on to be ranked as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, established at the request of Napoleon III.

After several changes of ownership over the years, the estate is now run by the Cazes family.

  • Very faithful to the description: superb

    Gilles, the steward of Château Ormes de Pez, gave us a warm welcome, and we moved into a beautifully appointed room (the one in the photo). The residence offers several areas for dining and relaxing, as well as a lovely west-facing terrace and large garden. The tours of Lynch-Bages and Lilian Ladouys were very comprehensive and well commented by experienced, attentive guides. The restaurants, Lavinal and Maison du douanier, were very appropriate. At each stop we were well looked after, and the time to get from one to the other was very generous, allowing for other stops or visits. Nadège and Gilles at Les Ormes de Pez were very helpful. - My favorite part? The evening meal at Les Ormes de Pez, in the dining room and terrace at Lavinal. We loved the tastings too. - If I had to make one suggestion? Have one glass for each wine tasted, to allow return trips (Lynch-Bages), and have the bread from Lavinal for the meal on the 1st evening. - Would you recommend this stay? Yes, absolutely, and we're regular visitors to the Médoc. Very well organized. Thank you, it's relaxing.

  • Beautiful stay in Haut Médoc

    Staying at the château "Ormes de Pez", we were made very welcome by the estate steward. The cold evening meal was more than copious and of excellent quality. The room was as large and bright as you'd expect. The next day's tasting at Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, preceded by a tour of the estate and winery, was masterfully conducted by an exceptional young guide. The ensuing meal at Café Lavinal was of the highest quality. Our second tasting at Château Lilian-Ladouys in St-Estèphe was also of very high quality, with a competent and friendly guide. We were delighted with this stay, which had been offered to us. We highly recommend it.

    Excellent welcome and quality service at Rollan de By. Good service at Lynch-Bages. Unfriendly welcome at Lavinal and very light meal. Warm welcome and very good food at Saint Seurin. A pleasant stay and generally satisfactory service.

  • Oenology course at Château Lynch-Bages

    Very warm welcome, small group workshop which is much nicer. Visit to the current and old wineries with very detailed explanations. The introduction to wine tasting was more than interesting, with visual, olfactory and gustatory appreciations, all led by a dynamic, friendly and very professional person.

  • Very well organized stay

    Perfect welcome at the Hotel Rollan de By. Wine blending workshop at Château Lynch-Bages: super interesting. Meal at "Le Saint Seurin" restaurant worthy of a great chef! The only downside was a less-than-friendly welcome at Café Lavinal, and an average meal.

  • The wines

    The vineyard covers around 100 hectares. From 1934 onwards, Jean-Charles Cazes introduced a more innovative approach and helped define the distinctive “Lynch-Bages style”. High standards and quality have always been at the heart of the estate, reflecting its philosophy of wine as an art de vivre.
    Today, Château Lynch-Bages welcomes visitors for wine, gastronomy, cultural and historical experiences. In 2010, the Cazes family received the honorary “Pioneer of Wine Tourism” award from the Conseil Supérieur de l’Œnotourisme. In January 2011, La Revue des Vins de France also named the estate “Best Vineyard Welcome 2010”.

  • Tours and Tastings at Château Lynch-Bages

    Château Lynch-Bages welcomes visitors for a tour of the estate and a wine workshop, offering the opportunity to discover four Médoc appellations.
    Alternatively, you can take part in a blending workshop: learn to identify the four main Bordeaux grape varieties through a tasting of single-varietal wines from Lynch-Bages, before creating your own blend from the same vintage.
