The owners of Château La Grande Clotte

Coming from families of Cognac producers, young owners Julie and Mathieu Mercier fell in love with Château La Grande Clotte. This couple of agronomist engineer and winemaker embarked on the adventure by acquiring the castle in 2016.

Estate initially entrusted in farming for 25 years, the charm and potential of the place seduced the new owners who aim to give back to this place its letters of nobility.

With a family winemaking experience and an international professional background, Julie and Mathieu produce their wines there with passion and an innovative mindset.

Travellers' review - Château La Grande Clotte

  • A Stay in Saint-Émilion

Arrival at Château de la Grande Clotte, a warm welcome from Julie and Mathieu, a relaxing setting, and plenty of space to host family events. Very comfortable room and a high-quality breakfast, featuring beautiful tableware and homemade products, not to mention the wine tasting. Second visit to Château de Ferrand, owned by the Bich family, including a tour of the cellar and a tasting featuring a blend of different grape varieties. A very light charcuterie platter. Wine prices were inconsistent compared to those at retail stores. Christophe

  • "The essentials at Grande Clotte

Excellent stay with a warm welcome at the Domaine de la Grande Clotte by Julie and Mathieu. Everything was in place to combine discovery of the region with a taste of local produce. We'd like to thank Julie and Mathieu for being such superb hosts. An absolute must!

  • We œnologie château La Clotte

Very pleasant weekend. Château la Grande Clotte, a pleasant, magnificent and restful setting. 1st evening at the restaurant de la gare in St Emilion: very good 2nd day city tour and evening meal at the gastronomic Château du Grand Barail: a fabulous experience. An idyllic setting, extremely friendly staff and a succulent meal. It was absolutely perfect! Last day with a visit to Château Ferrand. Elliot showed us around, then explained the different grape varieties, ending with a blending and tasting session. The only downside was that the board was a little light...

  • Weekend wine tasting at Chateau La Grande Clotte in Lussac St Em

Superb weekend with Julie and Mathieu MERCIER from Château la Grande Clotte in Lussac St Emilion. Top-notch welcome, top-notch gîte and top-quality activities (electric bike ride to enjoy the St Emilion landscapes with picnic of very good local produce + table d'hôte dinner in the evening + tour of the estate and wine tasting). We really enjoyed everything. Go with your eyes closed, you won't regret it!

  • Superb stay

A perfect weekend. The bike tour is really great: the pic-pic is delicious and is composed through an itinerary where you stop at a bakery, charcuterie, chocolaterie, macaroon store. It's a great idea, and a lot of fun too. All accompanied by a small bottle of wine and water. It's all very, very well thought out. The bike ride is wonderful, and the electric battery helps on the way back. The stay at La Grande Clotte is super relaxing: beautiful pool, right in the vineyards, nice arrival with a glass of wine and a delicious lunch-box, clean and bright rooms. Oh, and excellent breakfast too, with everything you need! Homemade fruit, breads, yoghurt and jams. On top of that, Julie explains everything and is very attentive to everyone's needs. I recommend 100%.

  • Stay Chateau la France Clotte

An absolutely perfect stay. We really appreciated Julie and Mathieu's welcome. The location is magnificent. The bike ride prepared by Julie was ideal: a superb route through the vineyards. The idea of coupons for the picnic was really clever. Dinner at the restaurant was also a very good choice. We were lucky enough to enjoy the presence of the cooper, which made the moment even more unique. And the wine blending with Cyndie was a very warm and professional moment. Everything came together to make this an unforgettable stay. A big thank you to the whole team - we really recommend this experience.

  • Thank you Stay from May 13, 2024 to May 15, 2024

Excellent stay at Chateau LA GRANDE CLOTTE. Julie and Mathieu are very professional and welcoming. We discovered their estate and tasted the château's wines. The château is well located, brand new and very comfortable. The meal at the Auberge St. Jean was excellent and the owners very friendly. The Bistrot de la Gare was very pleasant. I recommend this stay. All the people we met were very professional. Thank you very much. Mr. and Mrs. ZMAHER

  • Very pleasant stay and beautiful discoveries

We stayed at Château La Grande Clotte. We very much appreciated Julie and Mathieu's attentive welcome, the comfort of the place, the breakfasts with local produce, and the very interesting discussions during the tour of the winery and vineyards. Their wines are excellent. The program was well balanced, with several activities at Château Grand Ferrand (visit, blending workshop and tastings), and free time to discover Saint-Emilion and the surrounding area. The three restaurants on offer (le bistrot de la gare in Puisseguin, l'Auberge Saint-Jean in Saint-Jean de Blagnac, l'Envers du décor in Saint-Emilion) were all great, each in a different style. We also really enjoyed visiting the monolithic church, strolling through Saint-Emilion and its surrounding vineyards, and last but not least, discovering the wines. All in all, a lot of fun. This type of stay, a first for us, makes us want to come back. Gérard and Isabelle

  • Magnificent stay in the heart of a vineyard

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Château La Grande Clotte. Quiet location in the middle of the vineyards, a warm welcome from the very helpful owners, a very pleasant and comfortable room - in short, we'd recommend it. The restaurants we chose, including Le Bistrot de la Gare and Auberge St Jean, were wonderful. Bravo for the organization! Stay to be repeated in this beautiful region!

  • Pleasant Week End

Nice visit of the Domaine, the cellars and tasting. Hotel "fleur de Roques" Charming with a warm welcome, comfortable, quality catering (a small drawback for the bathroom, it would be good to replace the bathtub with a shower) brilliant blending workshop at "château de la grande Clotte", with passionate and enthusiastic owners

  • The wines of the estate

The owners strive to produce a traditional wine, accessible to all. Their wine is in their image: it tells their story, strong with their North-American experience.
Several times rewarded, the quality of their wine and its reputation is no longer to be made: some wine specialist magazines regularly highlight it. From their first vintage from the 2016 harvest, they obtained 2 stars in the Michelin Hachette wine guide.
